DoD SEES MAJOR IMPACTS FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION’S NEW CHEMICAL REGULATIONS
A top Defense Department official says the European Union's (EU) broad chemical regulatory system could have major "indirect" impacts on the Defense Department, including limiting supplies and increasing costs of some materials, although the department will likely be able to comply with the system's direct requirements, such as measures requiring substitution of harmful chemicals. This news comes from a Defense Department alert released earlier this week. more

Henkel Corporation has announced a 5-to-15% price increase on select items across its product range, effective for June 16, 2008 shipments. Tom Rapps, vice president, marketing, adhesives and sealants, cited dramatic increases in energy costs as well as raw materials.

Vulcanium Metals Incorporated, a global leader in titanium distribution and first-stage processing, is pleased to announce key changes that will enable its continued growth in aerospace, medical, and industrial markets. As part of the changes, Jerry St. Clair has been promoted to p resident, while David Yoho has been promoted to senior vice president. In his new role, St. Clair will focus on the planning and management of resources and infrastructure necessary for Vulcanium’s growth in domestic and worldwide markets. In his 27-year tenure with the company, St. Clair held a wide variety of responsibilities, including domestic and international sales, purchasing, and materials management. As senior vice president, Yoho will lead the sales organization in achieving growth in all markets served by Vulcanium Metals. He is a metals industry veteran, with 15 years of commercial experience in the titanium distribution industry. Serving as vice president of sales since the year 2000, he has played an instrumental role in establishing Vulcanium as a market leader in the medical and industrial sectors. At the same time, Richard Leopold will now be the CEO of the company. Leopold, who led the company as president for the past 20 years, will focus on long-term, strategic growth initiatives for the company.

The National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF) and the College for Creative Studies in Detroit have announced the winners of this year’s “Bright Design Challenge,” a novel program that encourages young designers to incorporate bright “chrome” finishing in their automotive designs. This year’s specific challenge was to design for hybrid vehicles. And the 2008 winners are: 1st Place (Jay Uh); 2nd Place (Dong Tran); 3rd Place (Zack Whitaker); and Honorable Mention (Evan Mai). NASF would also like to recognize the sponsors of the annual competition. Brillion, Wis.–based Professional Plating Inc., a leader in the Midwest powder coating, e-coating, and zinc plating markets, earlier this week announced that the company will be making new investments totaling up to $7 million over a five-year period. The initial stages of this being for a new investment in its Brillion facility totaling $4 million in 2008. The first phases are inclusive of 65,250 square feet of new production space and new equipment. Furthermore, the new expansion is projected to add 32 jobs over the next three years. “Professional Plating has seen significant growth over the past several years, and expanding our facility and offerings will help position our company for even greater success in the future,” said Larry Dietz, general manager. He noted that Professional Plating has seen an increase in sales of over 50% in the last five years. “In addition to increasing our capabilities, the expansion will allow us to reconfigure manufacturing operations to improve flow and enhance our efficiency. The decision to continue to grow was an easy one.”

DuBois Chemicals, the industrial division of JohnsonDiversey, Inc., a leading global provider of cleaning and hygiene solutions, will be participating at the National Environmental Partnership Summit, to be held May 19–22, 2008, in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel. Bruce Dunham, director of innovation at DuBois, will be presenting as part of the Next Generation Conversion Coatings session, which is being held on Wednesday May 21. The Environmental Partnership Summit is an interdisciplinary gathering of environmental professionals and assistance providers from diverse sectors all over the country and world. It was created five years ago with the merger of the annual meetings of the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR), the Compliance Assistance Providers’ Forum, and the Performance Track Participants Association (PTPA). AkzoNobel has agreed to a transfer of the lease on its London base. The company will be moving into new office space a few miles away in Portland House. The Manchester Square property—formerly ICI’s head office—will be taken over by The Boston Consulting Group. The substantial deal has been agreed to just a few months after AkzoNobel’s acquisition of ICI. “We’re very keen to make swift and efficient progress with all aspects of the ICI integration and it’s pleasing to have agreed this transaction so quickly,” said AkzoNobel CEO Hans Wijers. “It’s also a fine example of how focused we are on benefiting from the many synergies we have identified.” The company has taken over the 26th floor of Portland House, which is situated close to Victoria Station. Approximately 75 employees will move to the new location and are due to be in place by the end of June. The Manchester Square deal will officially be finalized in August.

DuPont Industrial CoatingSolutions Brazil recently received the "Partnership Excellence Award" from the John Deere Agricultural Equipment Division at the 2008 John Deere Achieving Excellence Banquet and Supplier Conference. The "Partnership Excellence Award" honors excellence in supply of paint and coatings for 2007. DuPont Industrial CoatingSolutions Brazil excelled in the quality of the coatings, the timely supply of the coatings, and its superior service to John Deere in the application of these coatings.

BASF AG plans to double its manufacturing capacity for certain alkylethonalamines (AEOA) by mid-2009. This expansion is the company's response to increases in its customers demand for these products. BASF manufactures its range of AEOA specialties at the integrated Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany, by means of a flexible, fully backward-integrated multi-product facility. AEOA, such as ethylethanolamines, propylethanolamines, and butylethanolamines, are used successfully in a wide array of applications, including coatings and lubricants in pharmaceutical and agrochemical products.
