Metalforming companies are somewhat less optimistic about the trend in general activity and in their expectations for new orders over the next three-month period than they were one month ago. That’s according to the newly released September 2009 Precision Metalforming Association, PMA, Business Conditions Report.

On January 1, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, will, for the first time, require large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to begin collecting greenhouse gas, GHG, data under a new reporting system. This new program will cover approximately 85% of the nation’s GHG emissions and apply to roughly 10,000 facilities.

The U.S. economy lost 216,000 jobs in August, pushing the nation’s unemployment rate to 9.7%, according to a newly released Labor Dept. report. While job losses are never good news, analysts are nonetheless encouraged by moderation in the overall loss of jobs.

A newly released government report showed U.S. auto sales reached $3 billion in August, largely on the strength of government incentives such as the Cash for Clunkers program. Several automotive manufacturers experienced double-digit sales increases as trade-in incentives pushed overall industry sales to the first year-over-year increase in almost two years—all welcomed news to industry analysts.

The Association Connecting Electronic Industries, or IPC, has released its North American Printed Circuit Board Report providing key statistics for the month of July. For the most part, both shipments and bookings were down compared to June.

The newly released Institute for Supply Management’s Index, a barometer of manufacturing inventories, rose more than 8% to 52.9 in August—up from 48.9 in July. A reading above 50 indicates expansion and growth, while a number below 50 means economic contraction.
