You Be The Chemist is an educational and fun academic competition for 5-8th grade students in chemistry designed by the Chemical Educational Foundation. Connecticut is one of 26 states participating in the Challenge in 2013. Approximately 75 students from Middlebury, Naugatuck, Newtown and Southbury participated through qualifying exams and regional challenges held earlier this year. With support from their families and teachers, the students studied diligently for weeks to prepare. The top-scoring participants from those local challenges advanced to the state challenge.

Prizes were awarded to all participants and the top scorers, which included: trophies, medals, passes to the Discovery Museum, tickets to the Bridgeport Bluefish and a Samsung Tablet. A $200 prize will also be awarded to Rochambeau, the school of the state champion.

Henry Hu will represent Connecticut at the You Be The Chemist National Challenge Competition, scheduled for June 24 in Philadelphia. The participants in the National competition receive an expenses-paid trip to Philadelphia from the Chemical Educational Foundation.
