The January U.S. auto sales report showed General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co., came up big—all posting double-digit sales increases.
Here’s how things shook out:
General Motors Co. said its January sales rose 14% compared to the same month a year ago due to higher fleet and crossover vehicle sales. Crosstown rival Ford Motor Co., meanwhile, was up 25 % from January 2009, while Nissan Motor Company’s sales grew 16%. Hyundai’s sales rose 24% for the month.
Not all shared in the parade, however. At Toyota, hurt by sales activity halted by the recall of 2.3 million vehicles, sales fell 16%. Toyota suspended sales of the Camry sedan, its top-selling vehicle, as well as seven other cars and trucks on Jan. 26 following a recall over sticky accelerator pedals. Among them: Corolla and Avalon cars, the Matrix hatchback, the Tundra pickup, the Sequoia SUV and the RAV4 and Highlander.
Rounding out the pack was Chrysler, which reported sales decreases of 8 %; Honda Motor Co., which experienced a 5% drop in revenues; and Kia, which said its January U.S. sales were essentially flat.
